Royalty Free and Public Domain Launcher Icons
Some of the Android launcher icons that have been used in articles and sample projects are here. For information on icon sizes see the article Android Icon Size – Launcher and Google Play Store. See the article Free Android Icons Using OpenClipArt.org and Paint.NET for a tutorial on generating Android icons from free images available from the Open Clip Art Library. See the article Android Launcher Icons Using Inkscape to see how icons can be created using Inkscape. The Low Dots Per Inch (LDPI) icon (36×36) is less important for modern Android devices but is include for completeness. The Extra Extra High Dopts Per Inch (XXHDPI) icon (144×144) is not shown and is not yet in all the zip files.

Using the Android Icons
To use the above icons in a project they need to be in the relevant drawable folder, as discussed in the articles. If you download the zip file containing all the graphics at the various densities they can be imported into a project via the File menu and Import option then selecting Archive File (see Move Android Code Between PCs Running Eclipse for more information).
By default a launcher icon is called ic_launcher.png. If the imported PNG graphic is to be the App’s icon and it is not called ic_launcher.png then either rename it to be that (in all the screen density directories), or change the reference to the file name in the android:icon attribute in the manifest (AndroidManifest.xml).
High Resolution App Icon Example
A High Resolution App Icon is required when an App is published on Google Play (formerly Android Market). The article High Resolution App Icon for Google Play Publishing shows how to create one using Inkscape. This image is the result of following that tutorial. Click on the image to see the full size (512×512).
